Joe and Alice Heitz established Heitz Wine Cellars in 1961. They were originally from Illinois and South Dakota respectively, but met in California in the mid 1940's.

The second generation grew up in the vineyards and cellars of the family firm, and today manages the business.

My favorit is Grignolino, light, playful wine. The invigorating floral aroma hints at sweetness, but the taste is surprisingly dry. Originating in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, this zesty varietal is a particularly good companion for spicy foods. Bring it slightly chilled on your next picnic.
